Hoist Failure!

Getting ready to hit the water this morning.....turn the wheel on the hoist a couple times and BANG! One of the cables snapped and the boat dropped 2' + into the water. Scared the crap out of me. I was in the boat with my buddy's son and he was lowering us down. NOT cool!

So, I decide to just push the boat off the hoist, but no...the cradle fell so low that the running gear would not cross over it. We had to pick the boat up and pull it off. What a PITA!! I'm thankful that none of the gear was damaged, nobody was injured,an I had the foresight to manually pull the boat off the hoist vs. using power. That would have made a crappy situation much worse!

After some nice sets, I pulled the boat, which I had not planned on doing until Halloween. Super irritated about it.

Did you use your Superman Powers to lift the stern?

Why of course I did!

holler if you find time for dawn patrol.

weekends are kind of busy but most weekdays are wide open.

Thanks!! I will keep you posted. Weekday mornings are very difficult for me. Particularly the next 2 weeks.

A broken lift cable is always a good time. Call Diversified Dock & Lift in Whitmore lake and they'll have you up and running in no time. That is who I went through two summers ago when my cable snapped on a Friday afternoon right before we left town for the weekend. We came home to a new winch tube and our boat cranked out of the water. Good guys!

Glad you're all OK, that's a very scary moment! Zero warning and zero time to react, right?

Exactly.

I'm guessing the new boat rule is no one in the boat while going up or down?

Steve B.

Likely. Typically there is only one of us in the boat when we lower it but with my buddy and his son, the little dude (3 years old) really wanted to be in the boat.

Did your cables show any signs of wear?

None that I could see. I think that the wear signs were hidden. I think the a pully froze up and the cable became frayed at that location and it finally let loose.

Just out of curiosity, what make or model hoist do you have? I think mine has been binding although the cable and pullies are only 3yrs old. 3/4 hp motor struggles sometimes...hard to get a feel though when I'm not turning the wheel.

The past month I've been looking at the cables and pullies and in the back of my head getting a little concerned..then I saw this post. More concerned now.

Out of the blue my Shorestation snapped last year, and the neighbors snapped 2 weeks ago. New lift beam is $550-600. Neighbors estimate for repair was $800-1000 have not heard what it cost him. It was fixed within a week with the lift still in the water. Nothing like the sound of the cable snapping.

While not the greatest quality, I have a Lakshore LSV 40108. It's an older model, too. I bought it used so I have no idea what the maintenance history was. I'm quite positive that there are a couple pullies that took a crap on me and the cable was getting dragged across them causing it to slowly fray and ultimately break.

I was quoted $350-400 for my repair. It's a bit different than the shorestation though.

Look for frays in the cable. Take the boat off and run the lift up and down and inspect each cable closely. If you see any fray, ANY fray, replace the cable. Look at each pulley for slop and wear, replace as needed.

Additionally, I grease the cable where is winds up with lithium spray. So that if the cable rolls up on itself, when it rolls off of itself it's less likely to fray.

I too add lithium grease on the spool. I know when the cable winds onto itself and the has a tendency to pop off at the end of the row it can fray. Mine did ever so slightly (1 cable strand) So I wound it differently and greased and it works well now.
