Gelcoat Repair in Sacramento Area

Recommended Posts

My boat is in need of a gelcoat repair. The keel got deep scratches from the front bunk bolts that were sticking up because the wood bunk disintegrated while putting the boat on the trailer. The previous owner filled the scratches with fiberglass filler, sanded smooth and painted it. Unfortunately, I somehow did not see the extent of the repair while looking it over prior to buying it. Lakeside Marine gave me verbal quote of about $4K saying, “In order to do it right, the old repair needs to be ground off to assess the damage”.

You can imagine my discouragement.

I’ve found a few shops in the Sac area on the Internet:

River City Boat Works

Morrison Marine

Sacramento Boat Repair

The Complete Boat

Walton’s Marine Repair

Lakeside Marine

Sacramento Performance Marine

Superior Boat Repair & Sales

Norcal Marine

Smooth As Glass

A&C Marine

Hurliman Boat & Repair

Anyone have any experience with any of these shops?

Any recommendations?

All insight is welcome.

Hurliman and Morrison are probably the most seasoned. A&C is a deciple from Hurliman. Hurliman knows this stuff inside and out and is better with custom work (he gets a lot of the super pricy chris craft restorations sent down from Tahoe, etc.).

That being said, for a simple gel coat work -- Morrison may be your best bet. I've heard they do nice work and he seems like a nice guy when I've talked to him.

I've never actually used any of these guys but I did some research years back for the sunsetter rebuild and that's what I found.
