3/4" or 1" - For reversible pump

Recommended Posts

Murphy8166

Starting to order the parts to plumb in my reversible system.

Since the boat has 3 drain plugs all 3/4" I am going to utilize the drain plug next to the SkiVee. The hole is 3/4" so I will using a 3/4" nipple and a 3/4" ball valve. At this point I can either run 3/4" hose to the pump and intothe sack or I canget 3/4" to 1" thread to hose bard adapter and run 1" hose thru the pump and to the bag.

My bottleneck is the 3/4" fitting in the hull so I am wondering if I should go with 3/4" or 1" hose....price is not a factor in this decision.

Only asking question for the fill side, not the vent side. Vent side would be 3/4 to match rest of boat.

I would say the bigger the hose, the better for the johnson pumps. I'm going to be doing a ballast upgrade on my boat here soon, and I plan on using all 1" hoses off the reversible pumps.

1" for sure. Even though you have one restriction, it is one restriction in one area with less restriction through the rest of the system.

Your through hull is 3/4" NPT, not 3/4" ID. Your hoses are 3/4" ID and are the restriction on a 3/4" NPT opening. A 3/4" NPT is actually just a bit larger than 1" OD. So, use a 3/4" NPT ball valve, 3/4" NPT to 1" barb, 1" hose and pump. Make sense?

I'm running the Rule pump from Wakemakers and it has a 3/4" NPT inlet and a 1" hose outlet. Flows 1100GPH.

Also, the 1" hose will fit over the Johnson pumps and you can clamp it to the pump inlet/outlet. If you go 3/4" you would have to mess with fittings to get the hose terminated to the pump.

I would most definitely use 1" hose on the outlet side of the pump so you can avoid the restrictive .75" sac valve fittings. You should not have too much trouble finding a .75" male threaded x 1.0" HB fitting that will thread into the outlet of your .75" ball-valve so you can use 1" hose for the inlet side of the pump as well.

The 1" fittings have a larger inside diameter when compared to the 3/4" versions. You will get better flow rates with the 1" hose. With that said from my testing it is only around 10 lbs. of water a minute. Not a lot unless you are filling up surf bags.
