New rudder = not happy

I just had my shaft, coupler, strut and rudder replaced and after using the boat I noticed a 1/4" side to side play in the rudder. The old rudder was tight and had no wiggle what so ever. Any input would be appreciated as I don't think it should move at all?

Does the new rudder have the adjustment tab? Maybe they just didn't "load" the rudder and the play your feeling is because the rudder is not loaded properly.

The old and new rudders have the adjustment tab, which by the way, is adjusted all the way to the port side, much more than the old rudder was. I'm not sure what you mean by "load" as the slop is, I would say normal for a cable and rack system. The play is in the shaft to tube tolerances, like as if the shaft was too small or the o-rings were not in. The only thing different in parts are the counter weighted tiller arm that I requested. I am taking the boat back to the dealer next Tuesday but will water test for leaks at the rudder box and do the packing nut adjustment before I take it in.

Unacceptable....... Take it back to the shop. Something is not as it should be.

So I took it back to the dealer and they agreed that it was too sloppy, left it with them and was told to pick it up at the end of the day. Got home, phone rings, your boat is done, come get it. Drive all the way back to the dealer.......they did not put enough grease in the rudder box and now it is rock solid  Too bad I didn't just do it myself (as usual) I could have saved half a day and $40 in fuel. Anyway, all is good now, finally.

When you own a boat, you better become a boat mechanic....I think those are the wise words from Pete?? And he is wise beyond his years!!

I totally agree and I fix/work on everything I own that I can, which includes vehicles, trailers, and the family home. It has saved me tens of thousands in repair costs. People ask me how I know what to do, to which I reply "I don't, but I'm going to have to figure it out because I'm not paying someone the ridiculous amount they want to fix it.

i figure if it's broken then i probably can't hurt it a lot more if i tinker w it to figure out how to make it better.

I am having the same problem. My old rudder box had a way to grease it. The new housing doesn't as it is closed. Any suggestions on how to add grease to a closed housing unit?

Thanks in advance.
