Cooling hose intentionally plugged, why?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm a brand new owner of a 2006 VLX. After snooping around inside the boat and underneath the hull in detail, I've noticed something very odd that I'm hoping someone can explain to me.

A hose that runs from the bottom of the hull to the v-drive / gearbox appears to be permanently plugged. I must assume this was originally intended as a cooling line. The thru-hull valve was shutoff when I received the boat, and there's a permanent (but removable) plastic-looking plug stuck into the port from underneath the hull.

Why was this done and what should I do about it (if anything)? See pics below and thanks in advance for your help.

The cooling hose looks like it's hooked up right to me... I think that's where the paddlewheel would typically be for speed control? Was the boat upgraded to stargazer or some other form of GPS speed control?

If you are referring to the black disc (plug) next to the water pickup, that's the depth transducer. Everything looks normal to me.

Now that I double check it, I may have had it wrong. The brass grate-looking water pickup (not the plastic plug) actually leads to that hose... should I open up the thru-hull valve then?

I've had it on the water for some hours with this closed-off so I hope I didn't ruin anything... no overheating or warning messages popped up on the dash.

Hopefully the screw on the through hull valve handle has just loosened and allowed the handle to back off the stem and fall down to the hull. I actually had one on my 06 do that this year,

In this pic the valve is closed and the handle appears to be secure....I hope you're ok but....On a brighter note, that engine area looks nice and clean

Pull the intake hose from the V-drive & look down it to make sure the valve is open. The hose will be stiff but you should be able to see daylight thru it.

If you've already run the boat for hours then I'm sure there is no problems.

Disaster averted... the thru-hull valve had been shutoff in order to access & replace the adjacent malfunctioning ballast pump and the boat had not been on the water since...

Thanks to everyone for the help.
