What do you guys think ?

For starters, if I was really committed to this I would have bought it and then posted this thread so no one would have bought it before me.

I came across this boat today http://merced.craigslist.org/boa/3216268139.html I called the guy to find out why he thought the heads were cracked. The boat over heated because of a bad impeller and had to be towed in. He did a compression check and found one cylinder not holding. After removing the heads he found a bad valve. He took the heads to a machine shop where he was informed the heads were cracked. this is the short story, I hope I didn't leave anything out. He doesn't want to mess with it, too many other projects going on. He told me he would let it go for 3k.

The boat has 932 hours. I wouldn't buy the boat to keep, just to fix and flip. So let me hear the pros and cons. The boat is 35 miles from my house so travel is not an issue.

If it got hot enough to crack both heads, I'd expect some other problems will surface.

After you buy the needed parts and invest all your sweat equity how much will you net? Plus you probably won't get it sold until next summer.

I'm thinking not worth your time.

Points well taken I thought about the same issues.

If your going to do the work yourself you could certainly make some cash especially if you yank some heads off a junkyard truck. I would bet the block is still straight. Cast blocks can take quite a bit of heat and not warp.

Wow, for 3K it seems like a good deal. Maybe call around and see if you can get prices on new heads, gaskets etc...that will give you a good idea of total cost. Also, what other project d you have going on? What other ones do you have coming up as well! That may make your mind up for you...

For just a "project" and not making a whole lot of money once it's completely done, I wouldn't bother.

If you were gonna buy it, fix it, and keep it, awesome deal.

COuld be a real money pit....bad wood stringers, how is the tranmission, new bunks, new tires, vinyl, cushions, etc......BOAT=BRING ON ANOTHER THOUSAND

I have seen quite a few older Malibus around not selling. I just sold my 1990, but it had a new tandem axle trailer that was $5500, nice stereo, PP, and was in super shape.

If you are really looking for something to do, I have a house on Tulloch that needs some work...I'll even throw a pull behind my bayliner!!!

Im with Pete on this one but if you just like working on old boats it will keep you properly entertained all winter. The cost of this as a hobby could be really good as you will make your beer money back when it finally sells.

I would think you would need to go through the block as well. I bet the cylinders would be out of round and I would not put new or used cylinder heads on if both the heads and block were not ground flat. So the motor would need to come out. At that point would you go through the entire motor? It would need to be striped down to surface grind.
