Fuel Pick Up Line - Which line is it?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to figure out which line to the fuel tank is the one with the fuel pick up line attached on a 99 VLX w/ monsoon 325. I would like to remove the line and clean the screen that I have read about. I have 3 lines, the bigger one is the vent line, then I have 2 smaller ones that run to the fuel pump. One with the shut off valve running to the low pressure filter, in a terrible spot, right under the rear seat supports, and one closer to the rear of the tank that would be alot easier to remove.

Which one is it and any tips on removal and cleaning?

You will have a fuel hose going from the tank to the bottom of the fuel pump and there should be a low pressure fuel filter in-line. In this part of the hose there are three things that you can clean.

1.) the screen on the end of the pickup tube in the tank.

2.) changing the low pressure fuel filter.

3.) the screen in the bottom of the fuel pump. fwiw, my fuel pump did not have a screen in it.

From there, you should have a high pressue fuel filter on top of the fuel pump (CHANGE IT). There will be a rubber / metal hose that joins the top of the filter to the fuel rail. The only other two things you could replace would be the anti siphon valve on the tank and acutal hose

That is everything on the delivery side that can be cleaned short of removing each injector and having them professionally serviced.

The other fuel hose is a return line that goes from the engine to the tank. Nothing to service on this as well other than going with fresh hose.

Murphy, I have changed both fuel filters already, so I guess the next step is cleaning both screens. Since I was changing the filters, I decided to go ahead and do this as well. Thanks for the info, I guess I will try to remove the pick up line first (was really hoping it was not on the one that will be tough to remove due to carpeted seat base centered right above it).
