Inexpensive Sand Spike

Recommended Posts

Was at the local hardware store picking up some things for a remodleing project at the house when I found this. Relatively inexpensive and should work fine for anchoring the back of the boat to the shore when hanging out at the beach. It is 15" long and 2" diameter at the top.

Cool.

We use a dog spike, that is turned, so it cork screws into the dirt. It cost me a buck at the Dollar Store. Target, Kmart, Walmart all have them in the doggie sections.

I have one of those corkscrew dog spikes too but it really only works in really soft sand. Buying a heavy duty spike is on my short list of things to get before the summer starts. I'm headed to the hardware store tonight anyway so I'll keep my eyes open for something similar. Thanks for the heads up, RR.

With the type of money we are paying for our boats lately don't trust a cheap part to protect your boat.

You will be sorry in the long run.

Here is a lightweight solution for those beach anchoring needs.

Sandspike

These will work on all types of beaches.

Protect that investment!

Right now I'm using a steel concrete form stake that I painted. I know it will eventually rust....

But that pricey sand spike gave me an idea. Buy a piece of 1/4" X 1-1/4" X 4' "L" alum from OSH for like $6, cut it in half, cut/grind a point on one end and drill a 3/8" hole in the other end and use a shackle in the hole....

Bam! You got two home maid sand spikes that won't rust and you saved $50.

...something else for the to-do list.

The only time that we use something like this is when we are hanging out at the beach on the boat so my investment is safe, otherwise we use a second anchor.

Gotta speak up for the orginal Sandspike. I've never had a problem getting it into the ground without a hammer, and it always holds. I've had this one for around 4 years. Easy to stow and tie up to.
