1995 Bu runs great then coughs and dies- help please

Recommended Posts

She has been solid out of the gates but after sitting and being restarted she cough chokes and won't stay running. This tends to happen when we are going to pull skiers/boarders. I switched the fuel filter thinking it was water getting in since the problem seems to be remedied by opening the carb/injectors. And letting it dry out. Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Are you talking about starting when the engine is hot? On a hot day?

Vapor lock?

Lots of explanations on this & most every other boat website out there about it. Run your blower a lot. Try using a cold, wet rag on top of your fuel pump when it's happening.... should start right up.

Long term fixes vary.... fuel line insulation, 2nd fuel pump to keep fuel pressure up throughout the fuel lines, etc.

Sorry my fault, I should have explained that I insulated the fuel lines and this occurs when the engine is not hot ( temp 140 to 160)have been able to put my hands on the manifold and block.

It is not the overheating of the motor that causes vapor lock it is the motor being heat soaked while sitting. I use a boat bumper to prop up the motor box while sitting. It allows enough heat to escape to keep the fuel in the fuel lines and pump from becoming vapor. i.e. vapor lock.

For me it would run great all day and after short breaks there were no issues but if we let it sit while swimming or having lunch then we would get the rough running and vapor lock. As AirJunky noted the blower will help aswell anything to keep the area from getting heat soked,

I had similar problems and I started using different fuel this year with less ethanol in it, so that seems to help a little, but I also run the blower longer and let the engine breath if it's a really hot day and that seems to usually do the trick for the most part.

Did you check the kill switch? I had an issue in my old mastercraft that I thought was fuel system related and due to temperatute...turned out my kill switch was going and seemed to be affected by temperature somehow.
