V-Drive Leak

Recommended Posts

I was out Saturday for about an hour when we got caught in a downpour. Had my head tucked down trying to see and noticed the v-drive/transmission warning light on. Checked the transmission fluid and was full. Checked the v-drive oil and was dry. Noticed some oil in my bilge. Didn't have any oil with me so limped back to the lift. Added nearly a quart the next day and hit the water. The warning light went off for about an hour of riding and came back on. Checked v-drive and was empty. Obviously I have a leak. What is the likely source and how easy of a fix. What are the chances I did any damage? It ran fine with no noises? Thanks in advance.

SPT, can't comment on the damage obviuosly better to be safe than sorry I would have it checked. As far as the leak goes, "IME" and from what I am seeing on other sites, the 05-06 Walters seem to have sump pan leak problems. If you are finding 30W oil in the bilge most likely it is the 4x 9/16 nuts loosened up on the sump (easy 1 wrench fix) or the other possibility is your oil line(s) to and from the trans oil cooler might be loose, once again oil in the bilge. If you have no oil in the bilge it is possible you have an internal oil leak in the trans cooler (unlikely) then you would probably experience and oil slick behind the boat when the oil gets pushed through the block and out the exhaust. Feel around on the bottom of the VD and oil lines where they enter the trans cooler to confirm. Good luck, Bill.

Yes, all 4 are at the 10, 2, 4 and 8 oclock positions on the bottom of the VD. A ratcheting box wrench will make it easier to get to and tighten, torquing (sp) it to specs will be the hard part due to the lack of room.
