Tie Down "Cleats"

Hi all,

Are there any other options out there for tie down cleats?

I want to support my local dealer, but I've already spent about $1000 there just this month since buying the boat -- ropes, bumpers, anchor, trailer locks, lifejackets, wakeboard ropes/handles, 10hr service, etc....

Just trying to find an alternative to spending another $500 -- if anything, I want to get some more surfboards to play with.

Has anybody had cleats installed somewhere other than the dealer?

Installed them yourself?

Can you get the Malibu cleats anywhere else?

Thanks!

Matt

Where is the best place to buy?

The local 'Bu dealer, or does someone sell the "malibu spec" neat cleats on the net?

(I've been tryin to stay away from the dealer knowing that nothing they sell is a good deal...)

Thanks,

Mook

Hi Mook,

I was at the dealer today and the Attwood cleats that you can get on the net seem to be the exact same cleat I saw on one of the boats - except there was an etched "malibu" on them. Other than that they looked the same.

I also found the dealer price to be a little high for my taste.

The lowest price I found online is around $45 each

Good luck - and thanks everyone for all the tips.

I think I'm going to get crazy and try to install by myself based on the instructions from MalibuDoc.

Just take your time on the install and follow the old adage: measure twice cut once!

Seriously, they'll be easy to install. I installed PerfectPass on our 'bu last year and cutting the hole in the hull was physically the easiest part but by far the most difficult mentally.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Put masking tape on the area that you are going to put the cleats. Then measure and mark the tape, then measure a couple more times to make sure they are right. Make sure to check behind the mounting area to see if you can secure the cleats with a wrench/socket.

This is exactly why dealers exist. Even though I'm comfortable with a drill, I don't know if I'd be comfortable taking that drill to my hull. A few extra bucks is worth the security of having your dealer do it. If they screw up - they would be responsible to have it taken care of and re-glassed.

If you're handy though (and mentaly stable enough to take a sharp object to your hull) - go for it!

I agree that it is a pretty easy process. I submitted that how to article with no experience prior. The worst part is getting the nerve to drill into your boat. After you get over that, it's a piece of cake.

The Attwood Neat Cleat is very easy to install. It is just two 1" holes, as opposed to needing a jigsaw for some of the fancy spring loaded pop-up cleats. I just put one on the bow, behind the bow light for tying off the anchor.

Get the 6" version. Get a NEW 1" hole saw and a tube of clear 100% silicone. Measure twice, cut ...well, twice.... (per cleat)

My advice is to put them as high as you can. At the rear, I'd put them on top of the deck. This will make them more useful for bumpers. Just make sure you have a flat spot and no obstructions underneath for washers and nuts.

Good luck, Patrick
