Rough Weekend on the Water - Ignition Switch issue

Recommended Posts

So up here in Minnesota on Fathers Day it was pretty rough on the water for my LXi between the the winds and large V hulls. I was reacting quick to some very large waves/wakes that were headed my way as we were just floating and the bow was pointed straight into them (it would have been a very bad swamping). I was turning the key to start up and make a maneuver to take them on my starboard side when the key ends up turning past the usual stopping point and then died. I turned the key again and it just goes all the way around now. I am able to start it but the key doesn't spring back from engaging the starter so you have to back it off a little. On top of all that a storm was headed our way so we had to get off the lake in a hurry.

We have a big family event on Saturday that I am going to need to have Black Sunshine in good starting condition. Needless to say I am looking for some advice on what I can do and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hope all the Dad's out there had a great Fathers Day!

Sounds to me like you need to replace your ignition switch. I would at least do that and then go from there. I replaced mine last year and i think the part was only about $30.00

Thank you! Yes, I looked into it and it and just ordered the part from the local dealer. The reason the starter wasn't engaging and it would die is because the switch would go too far past the contacts and when I would continue to turn the key all the way around it would fire again. Whew, I am glad this is going to be a quick and inexpensive fix. My thought though is that if they made these ignition switches a little better and charged a tad more then 30 bucks for them you wouldn't end up with this problem, but I digress.

Are you sure the switch has not just come loose in the hole & your spinning the entire thing rather than the keyhole rotating inside the switch like it should? This would cause the wires to become twisted & possibly short out, causing the symptoms your describing.

Good point Bill, thank you! I will have to pull the screws on the dash plate and find out tonight. I have a sneaking suspicion that the switch may have broke because I did hear a snap which sounded like plastic. I did order the $30.00 part just in case.
