Won't stay running...

I have a 90 model Euro F3 Malibu ski boat. When I turn the key it starts up, but as soon as I let go of the key it dies. If I hold the key in the on position the boat stays running, but of course that keeps the starter turning over as well.

Any insight?

Sounds like the "Run" contacts in the ignition switch are bad. That is the part that closes when you let the key return from the start position. Time for a new ignition switch (and new key).

Thanks "Happy To Ride", but I already eliminated the ignition switch. I bypassed it with a double toggle switch and same results. Tried a different coil as well. Any idea where the ballast resistor for the ignition coil is? 90 model Malibu..

Guess I should have posted this earlier.

Thanks again!

It sounds like the issue is at the starter. Did you do work there recently?

Like said above, there's an issue at the "run" location. Either at the switch or at the starter.

I had to take the purple wire off of the newly rebuilt starter. I am thinking the person who worked on this before me put the purple wire on the starter on the wrong post. This new starter doesn't have a "R" post.
