Wakesurfing troubles

So instead of hijacking someone else's thread I started this one.

So I use a 2004 Wakesetter LSV, with quad tanks and wedge. I also have two 350lbs fat sacs which we put in the back locker, given they are not filled to their capacity, but it fills in the area that is avalibale. Noramlly have a few people in the back corner of the boat. We run all the tanks except the starboard. We run about 10mph as the gps reads.

So what is the advice for next time? I am using my new phase 5 prop wakesurf board. Would it be better to fill one sac all the way up in the locker, then put one on the back seat and filled all the way up? We were able to go ropeless, my friend was doing alot better than me, but I still got ropeless for a minute or two. But it was an effort.

Any thoughts would be great.

More weight, period.

All tanks, AND Wedge - minus the rear locker that is opposite the rider.

Fill up extra fat sacs and put in rear locker.

Here's a crappy video (sorry dial up at home) of my '04 LSV weighted as noted above, with 3 adult males in the boat. You can see that we can't close the locker door becuase of the fat sacs in the locker. Get the weight as far back as you can. You can also see the wake isn't very big, but it's rideable. Gotta find that sweet spot, and hold on tight.

Oh ya, and get a dry suite. 58F at Anderson on Friday - it's chilly :)

I got my full suit and I was fine at 8am, left the wetsuit on the entire day, and I was fine sitting in the boat.

So I should fill the sacs all the way up and leave the locker open? Ok, i might need to get the boat out on the lake and just play with it, we never have much time to adjust it and play around with diffrent configs.

Good call for a young lad. :)

See, I don't agree with more weight - you've got plenty to make a clean wave behind that boat. More weight is almost always good for making the wave bigger, but you shouldn't have problems with getting a clean surfable wave with the setup that you've got. My opinion - you need to go out & drive around with the ballast loaded up & find the best speed. Never mind when people tell you 9.8 is the best speed, their speedo may be off, or yours may be different relative to theirs. Find what looks like the best, cleanest wave without anyone back there & go from there.

Did you ever get Perfect Pass?

I agree Tracie.

Forget what the dial sez and just watch the wake as you slowly gain speed.

Our speed will vary from one day to the next on the same lake and sometimes depending on the direction we go.

Gain speed until the face of the wave cleans up.

Then move stuff around to "taylor" the wave.

And for that ask Ronnie - he's got it dialed in for that hull - whatever he does is what works the best I've seen.

Yes We got perfect pass and dad wont say he likes it, but he wont return it he says, I am glad that I paid for half, just so we could get it.

Good! So use PP to bump up the speed in small increments as you're trying to find the right speed, without the rider back there of course. When you're having difficulty getting the right setup, sometimes going back to square one is the best solution.

I agree with Traci. I use my STOCK VLX, yes that is right no bow tank, no extra weight in the boat, just 2 people and the two rear tanks, the center tank and the wedge.

I don't get a huge wake, but one that is big enough to take me from one side of the lake to the other ropeless. You are washing out the wake, therefore you have not found the sweet spot speed.

Has daddy let you take his boat out yet without him? That is probable your biggest and most challenging obstacle to conquer... Just kidding!

Yeah it is pretty hard to have dad let his kid take his 50k boat out by him self. But this year I am turning 21, so supposedly as far as the insurance is concerned I can take it out by my self. But then the friends need to be trained and trusted etc... Untill then Ill keep trying to get rides from other people when dad cant take me. Next time hopefully I can talk him into staying longer so we can fiddle with the wake.

Hypertlitenerd,
This was our wave today with our VLX. Stock ballast - starboard side, middle & bow full, plus about 650 lbs in the starboard locker & 4 normal sized adults with one 65 lb kid. Our speed according to both the speedo & gps was right about 10 mph.

EDIT: No it's not the same boat, but I'm just trying to illustrate that you don't need a huge amount of extra weight over what you've got to get a clean wave.

Hey Hypertlitenerd, Maybe you need a 65 lb kid... ;)

Sounds like you have the weight close, just need to speed it up a bit. Watch the wake and S L O W L Y raise up the speed until the wake cleans up.

BTW Tracie... Nice Wake.

good golly thats huge!! Thats what I want! So another question is should we surf on the starboard side and go hs or switch ts.

Chris,

It shouldn't matter which side you go on. Haven't you ever just started at a speed, watched the wake, then slowly changed your speed like .2 mph watch it, then increase it up.

Good Luck,

Joe

Traci,

Do you put the weight over the stock hard tanks. I am still nervous about putting serious weight over the hard tanks.

Thanks,

Joe

Yup, we just put the bag right on top of the hard tank. We may at some point try to do something to reinforce it, but I'm not entirely sure that it needs it.

maybe your name should be changed to wavegirl....that is huge!

 Seriously though, this boat just gets better & better the more that we play with settings & weight.

Oh & I forgot to mention that we had the wedge down in addition to the weight.
