Shaft packing maintenance frequency

Recommended Posts

How often are you guys re-packing the shaft seal. This is my 9th season with my 2000 VLX and the packing has not been replaced since I've owned it. I adjusted the nut once early in my ownership to slow the drip, but haven't had to touch it since. It is dripping a little faster now than ideal, but not enough that it is an issue. I've been meaning to re-pack it, but is it necessary maintenance if there is not an issue? Is doing it as preventative a good idea?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Replace once you can't tighten the nut to adjust it anymore. I can't see any reason to replace it before it wears out, but some prefer a dry bilge and have upgraded to the dripless packings before the original wears out.

I think it depends on how much time your boat spends on the lake. If it's only out there for a day at a time & you can adjust it slow enough, let it be. But if your keeping it on the lake for weeks or months at a time, you need to have a packing that isn't filling the bilge once a day.

Thanks for the replys. I'll just tighten a little again and let it be. Boat stays on a lift when not in use so I'm not worried about bilge filling.

I would at least look at it every other year. It's not hard and driveshafts are way more expensive than packing not to mention the rope gets worn and does not always start dripping more in a linear fashion if you know what I mean. Dripless system is well worth $150 IMO.
