Carb Issue

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine with about a 15 year old MC, carbureated, had an interesting problem this weekend.

The boat was running fine, then just stopped. After sitting a few minutes, it would start again and run for a few seconds, then stop. This was pretty repeatable.

He changed the fuel filter (it was fine), and then removed a fitting near the carbureator. It had a "brown sugary" consistency material in it that was essentially blocking the fuel flow. This was past the filter.

Anyone ever see something like this? He is wondering if there is something in the tank that he needs to be worried about, but this is the first problem he has had at all with the boat.

Ethanol. happens after periods of nonuse. Looks like corn syrup. You can use an additive like Startron to help stop this along with other benefits.

+1 on the Ethanol. Time for a carb rebuild as there will be some more debris in the bowls which will eventually get in the idle ports and other small passages. Easy project you can knock out in a morning, make sure you have some good carb cleaning solvent or get one of the carb cleaner tins to soak all the parts in from an auto parts store. You should probably also check all the fuel lines as ethanol is hard on pre-ethanol fuel lines. When storing, drain the fuel out of the system and/or use a product like Stabil to keep the fuel from breaking down when stored.
