What Octane?

Recommended Posts

There is a thread over on WSR.com about this but I thought I would bring the discussion over here for some additional feedback.

I believe the Indmar manual recommends a minimum of 89 octane for the Monsoon engine, but our dealer uses and told us to only use the 87. The consensus on WSR seemed to be that you should really use the 89 which now confuses me since our dealer told us there is no advantage of going with the higher octane. Dontknow.gif

It's a Chevy small block. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I think I said it over there too... I put in 89. If I'm at a dock that offers 87 and 91 - I'll opt for the higher of the two.

No pings, missfires, false starts (one hydrolock, but....) in 86+hours.

I agree. I also use 89 or 91 if mid-grade is not available. Our engines are tuned a little hotter than a stock motor and the added octane will slow the burn a bit. The added cost is not really that much when compared to a vehicle you use everyday.

Honestly, I don't think you will hurt your motor by using 87 octane, but you could get some detonation and sacrifice a little power.

No need to overdo the octane on a low compression engine, 91+ is a WOM. I use 89 as recommended by Indmar and don't want to lose any performance, particularly being above sea level.
