Echelon Blower fan is LOUD ; any suggestions

I bought my first boat a Malibu Echelon LX 1996 in October. The blower fan is supposed to run whenever the rpm's are below 1500. OK that's fine, but the thing is loud. When we are idling around it is loud enough to be distracting to conversation. It's annoying really!!

Do you "hear" your fan when it's running? It isn't making any bad noises,,, just a loud fan noise.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

From your description, it sounds like you have the MEMS lights...little warning lights under the gauges??? I disconnected my auto blower feature early on in the boat's life for the same reason. Now, I'm going back 12 years or so, but I think the wire was brown in color. It was simply a "spade" connector behind the dash and I unplugged it. Blower still works, just not the auto feature.

My blower was always very quiet then I had a bearing start to go out and I could hear it squealing all the time. I replaced the unit with a new one for around $30 last year. A new blower could be worth a try.

That's what I was going to suggest as well.

Do you have an insulated engine cover? That might help too. Costs about $125, there's a DIY article on this site. It made a difference when I did mine, same boat.

Edit: it made a difference in reducing noise

I have a 1995 Echelon and must not have the auto blower feature or it was disabled when I bought it in 1997. Only time I use the blower is before I start it up.

I can def hear my blower running in the response. If it's just a loud fan noise, might not be anything wrong. How long you had boat?

I just bought the boat on October. Just got it out for the season. The fan sounds like a fan. No grinding or squealing so I suspect it to be ok. I think I will just disconnect the auto feature. The engine cover is fine because the engine noise to me is just right. Just not the fan noise.

Thanks...and gotta love these boats!

Did that last year, my new one is just as loud as the old one. These things are sealed units (for use in compustable gas areas) and use a magnet system to drive the fans, there really isnt a bearing in there to smooth things out. Just plastic on plastic.

You might try:

1. Make sure the fan is not attached to anything as that will transmit the fan noise to the structure of the boat and amplify the noise, I have mine simply hanging in space attached to the vent tubing on both sides (which also tends to dampen the fan noise)

2. insulate the fan itself, simply wrap in the engine cover style foam insulation.

3. Make sure the fan is not near an opening in the engine box, particularly the drink cup holders at the back, but also not near the front as it will be closer to your ear at the helm.

I have found the wire that turns it on at the back of the key ignition switch. If I disconnect this, will I also be successful in removing the auto feature of the computron. When it is disconnected, the manual on'off switch still works the fan.

Thanks

also,, the fan is not in the engine compartment. It is in a 3.5" air vent line above the fuel tank in the very back of the boat behind the rear seat back.
