Which impeller are you using?

Just bought the new 06 vlx and am gonna take it to get it ready for summer. I have used the black impellers on my old boat. I have been reading about some new green impeller that it suppose to be better. What are you guys using for your main impellers?

I just use the standard, Johnson impeller but I replace it prior to every season.

I see it as cheap insurance. I then KNOW it will be fine for the whole season. Compared with the cost of a potential engine repair or merely the inconvenience of a session spoiled by impeller failure, it's a no brainer for me. As a proportion of the annual cost of owning and operating the boat, it's a tiny, incremental increase.

Additionally (and somewhat counter-intuitive to the precaution I have just described!), I always have the parts and tools on board that allow me to conduct an impeller thermostat or fuel filter replacement out on the river should the need arise.

Regards, Stephen.

Yeah I skipped 1 season on my old boat and it ruined a whole weekend of camping right from the get. As soon as I got about 100ft from the dock my motor started squealing really loud..impeller shredded...never again..although with my old boat, it was not a job you could do at the lake. Hopefully this Malibu is a different case. I was just curious if there was a better impeller out now than the black one.

Globe user here. Former Johnson user who lost a couple of impellers.

I'm gonna end up being a bit of an abnormal boat owner in this list. We will occasionally ride late or early in the season, tend to run quite a few hours & have set the boats up so we can winterize quickly & easily so the boats can be stored with no water in them. Quick release fittings is only a part of the routine. The ability to pump start the engine is important for clearing out the last little bit of water in the heater, shower, &/or mufflers. That "dry" start is something that Globe impellers actually has a rating for..... 15 minutes of "run dry" time over the course of the impeller's lifetime. In a good year, we'll "winterize" the boat 5 or 10 times a year. I have never burned up a Globe impeller & I replace it every other year.

When I was using the Johnson impellers, we'd replace them every year & it wasn't unusual to have one burn up in a good year with 100+ hrs on the boat.

Do you have a link? I think the dry pump is what caused my other impeller to shred in my centurion..and oh man was is a pain to change. I think I about busted every knuckle changing that darn thing.

Yeah since I am buying the boat used, I'm gonna replace the impeller and probably change the fluids so I am off to a fresh start and will know the service from here on out.

I use the stock impeller and never had a problem. If you are giving any thought of dry running go with the globe.

Just put a Globe 100J impeller in and it won't prime on the hose. Had to put the Johnson back in. Is that a normal problem?

I've had this same problem using the fake-a-lake. Never had a problem if I hooked up the hose directly to the intake hose.

Same thing happened to me with a Globe. Ended up being the inside metal spindle was spinning, while the outside wasn't. Did it work in the water? I got a replacement Globe, and that worked, but not the original.

Will probably add a perko flush pro too while I'm at it..anyone know which size we need?

The percos come in 1" and 1 1/4" (what I use), but simply match your raw water hose dia to the perco size.

It's real easy to plumb one in, if there is space available to do it.

I got one in the mail from D-goose. I have taken my chances on my second summer with this boat and got it with a brand new impeller. Figured I would be fine since my water is pretty free of any debris.

But what in the heck does 'water only' mean? The only thing I could think of is if it corrodes the thing if you throw some antifreeze through the impeller? What else would I put through it?

Globe also makes a blue impeller for diesel fuel transfers.

I didn't try it in the water and just put the original one back in. I figured that I didn't want to risk it in case it wasn't pumping. It really pissed me off cause I had to go to the dealer for a Jabsco that cost me $69 plus $8 for a gasket, plus $50 for the Globe that failed. :rtfm:
