Rudder stuffing box replacement

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to replace my rudder stuffing box on my 87 sunsetter. There's a crack on the outside housing. Any body have any advice or tips on how I should go about this and where to get the part from? I'm new to owning a boat so any and all advice is appreciated :)

The article is here.

You can't get the stock rudder housing as a replacement part anymore. The updated Malibu rudder assembly with tiller arm is PN3411015

It is supposed to be a drop in replace by PN for the late 80's Malibu rudders. I believe the little rubber doughnut in the hull has to come out and the hole might have to be opened up slightly to clear the wider housing. You can see pics of the differences in my exhaust project thread in post #31 here.
