Good Battery Charger....

Recommended Posts

Can anyone recommend a good battery charger. A couple years back I bought what I thought was a good DiHard charger (computer controlled, etc). But I swear this POS is killing my batteries. It's always showing error messages on the screen and my original Optima Blue top is trash and new Napa battery is on the charger now and it gets to about 70% and an error message pops up.......I'm do e with this thing....

Any suggestions?

ProMariner, Guest, DualPro - all good battery chargers and maintainers. Stay away from battery tender as they only make low amperage units that do not have a multi stage charging approach.

If you really want to get crazy you can go with Xantrex or Progressive Dynamics - but maybe overkill for your setup.

Their are 3 different types of battery. (Flood/STD AGM, Gel, and High Performance AGM. They all need to be charged at different levels and maintenance at different levels. (This may have been the problem with your old set up) The Pro Sport works for all 3 types of batteries. I use a Pro Sport12. They make different sizes. They all do the same thing it is more about the size of your stereo system and how fast you want it too charge it back up. http://www.bakesonline.com/detail.aspx?ID=1424

I'm actually looking for something outside the boat. I keep my boat at a storage unit and don't have access to power to keep it plugged in. I mostly need it for pre season charging (battery removed from the boat) and in rare cases where we have long periods of time between outings.

Cool just make sure it will charge right for your type of battery.

So I just looked at my charger and it does list different types (standard, deep cycle, gel, etc), however the battery itself has no notation of what type it is.....

Optima Blue Tops are an AGM. Sounds like your using the wrong kind of charger.

Costco used to sell Blue Tops. They had a huge amount of failures & stopped selling them altogether.
