Best/longest Lasting Wax For Gel Coat?

Recommended Posts

How do you apply the wax?

LOL. Really?

I'm using a Porter Cable 7424 DA with Lake Country CCS pads (available from Autogeek as well). Typically the gray or blue pad for waxes. Apply very thin, the thinner the better.

However, a setup like this is really not needed..... You can certainly apply by hand with a foam applicator pad. The machine just makes it go faster. Either way, apply it thin.

To buff off, let it dry to a nice haze, and buff with a microfiber cloth. My favorite is the Cobra Miracle Towel (autogeek as well). This works AWESOME for buffing off waxes, and also great for wiping down with Hot Sauce after every outing. (My normal wipe-down procedure is a real quick one over with the Cobra Guzzler drying towel after we pull out, just to get 50 % of the water off the boat. Then a quick mist of Hot Sauce, and wipe the Hot Sauce off with the Cobra Miracle towel.... It goes very quick with 2 people piping down.) My boat is mostly black, and I won't touch the surface with anything other than Microfiber.

Gotcha, thank you. I think we have a microfiber towel somewhere.....

If you're going to order some Insulator wax, do yourself a favor and order a few of the Miracle Towels. They're awesome. Probably 3 times thicker than the typical microfiber towels you buy at the autoparts store.

Last fall I had the Bu in to get a few, um, scratches taken care of. Our local fiberglass experts have been in business a LONG time and really know their stuff. I asked what they recomend and the owner of the shop said w/o a doubt Mothers Pure Carnuba was the best product out there for boats.

Fiberglass boat wax or liquid insulator wax?

I saw a lot of people chime in that they use collinite. Understand that collinite makes a lot of different "waxes". I have listed the below products, please take a second to chime in which product you use.

870 Liquid Fleetwax:

925 Fiberglass Boat Wax:

I use #925. It is identical to their #845 Insulator Wax. It rocks! Rockon.gif

Which product is best really subjective. I’ve used all the products listed and a product called Rejex as well. In the end imho proper cleaning of the hull is most important. I personally use Starbrites polish w/ PTEF with two coats and the apply a sealant with synthetic polymer technology (Wolfgang Deep Sealant or Meguire’s Sealant 2.0). I know from my experience a carnuba wax doesn’t hold up in a marine environment especially with the force of water against the hull. It looks the best imho but again best suit for cars not boats. I do this once a month and then follow up w/ Babe’s spray wax after each use.

You can get a huge package of micro towels at Costco.

I use the #845 or the #925 both work great on all things that shine, use it on my carbon fiber road bikes, boat, burban, and the mini van. Thin coat and buff and wipe off with micro fiber

If you use Collinite, you do small areas and do not let the wax completely dry before removal. This is different than most waxes, every other wax I have used will typically recommend the wax completely dry before removal. I usually hand wax my boat, goto Costco a buy a bulk pack of terry cloth towels.... Electric buffers never worked great for me with a boat, especially trying to get into all the small areas the VLX has.
