Vapor Lock Kit?

Recommended Posts

yes, I put that in my vride when I was having my sporadic starting problems. It's very easy to install even for a moron like me.

Of course it turned out that vapor lock wasn't my problem after all, but if you really really want to be sure that you eliminate the possibility of vapor lock it is a super simple install. Shouldn't take more than an hour at the most.

I was told by the local supra dealer that you can build the kit from parts from NAPA for half the price though. It's just a carter low pressure pump and a piggyback harness to the fuel pump. If you can buy the plugs to fit the fuel pump, it wouldn't be hard at all to build the kit.

Anyone have model # for Carter pump to build this up? What psi range does it need to be within? I have no problem making my own if I know I have the correct pump. Wiring harness is no problem. The problem I have found is getting a low pressure pump with 1/2" inlet and outlet to match the current hose.

I did buy a Carter pump and installed it this morning. Seems to have fixed my vapor lock issue for today anyway. Yesterday was locking up on me again but not today. This is my last trick to finally kill this vapor lock issue. If it don't work I don't know what else to try. I always have ice water to ice down the pump when needed.Hope I don't have to do that ever again!!!!!!

The Carter pump # I used for any one interested is Carter P4389 Universal Marine Electric Fuel Pump. I bought it off E-Bay from Global Automotive of Miami, Inc. It comes with mounting Bracket but I had to get 2 new hose barbs to fit the 1/2" hose used on the boat. Make your own wire harness. It is only 2 wires that I attached ring terminals and attached them directly on top of my original pump where it is wired. Cost $100.

So, this pump goes between the output of the main pump and the input of the fuel rails? Where is it mounted?

Thanks,

Steve B.

no it goes between the tank and the high pressure fuel pump.

Correct. Tank, fuel filter, low pressure Carter pump to factory high pressure pump to fuel rail. I installed it under the rear center seat cushion. Just fit low enough to not interfere with the plastic bin that fits in there.

dalt1 - do you recall where you purchased the 1/2" barbs for the pump? I just bought my first boat, 02 Wakesetter VLX, and believe I am experiencing vapor lock issues. I ordered the same fuel pump on ebay.. should be here early next week. Thanks

Sorry don't remember but must have bought locally cause I don't remember mail ordering them.

No worries - I found them at Grainger for $3 for the pair. My pump is supposed to arrive today, I am anxious to get it installed so I wont have to worry about my engine not starting in the middle of the lake.
