Dumb Ballast Question From A Noob

Recommended Posts

bamabonners

We bought our boat last year, first time to have a boat with ballasts so I have a few questions.

I have a 2011 VLX and I have a few dumb questions:

1 - How do the pumps know how long to run?

2 - when I tell it to empty the tank, will they shut off on their own? I always cut them off when it appears to be at the end because I fear that it will burn the pump up.

3 - same as above, but with full tank. I shut them off when they begin to overflow. Will they shut off at some point if I didn't do it?

when filling, I shut them off when water comes out the overflow thru hull. In the 2011 do you have a ballast level monitor on the touch screen?

As for emptying, I can hear the pump change pitch when it runs dry

The Pumps on a 2011 VLX do not have timers. You can turn them on individually using the touch screen to the right of the steering wheel or you can turn them all on at once. The way that you know they are full is by looking at the individual tank level indicators on the Malivue or when water starts to shoot out the vent line.

If you use Mali view pre sets the pumps will automatically shut off and on when desired ballast levels are achieved. There are floats in the tanks that determine the water level, this how the Mali view displays the ballast level. Malibu uses aerator pumps, they can be run dry for a long duration before any damage (if any) will be done.. The aerator pumps have no impeller to burn up if you run them dry. If you use MTC to fill tanks they will not shut off automatically, if you leave them running it will not damage anything, just send water out the overflow... When you use MTC to drain tanks they also will not shut off automatically when the tank is empty.. Running them dry for a few minutes will not damage anything.
