Flushing Salt Water After Use

Recommended Posts

1998 Sportster lx, used at least every Sunday at the bay in San Diego. After washing and flushing yesterday I decided to drain the block on each side, plus I disconnected the hose running between the manifold risers. Water came out clear and unsalty, I think thats a good sign, and I'll pull and inspect when I do maintenance before river season. I haven't drained the block before and now wonder if leaving the clean fresh water in the block is better than draining it and letting air in? Also, should I drain the risers each time to keep water from sitting in them or leaking back into the motor?

A) Many people flush

B) You didn't ask if people flushed, you asked very specific questions about the best way to leave the engine. Answers to which, if someone knows, I'm sure will speak up.

I'd say the easy answer is no, you don't need to drain water out and leave air in. Zillions of inboards are used on fresh water and I don't think anybody drains the fresh water out, unless they are doing so to prevent freezing.
