1999 Sportster Starting Problems

Recommended Posts

We have just done a minor overhaul of our boat for the summer and once it was all back together it will no longer start. There is no winding without firing, so guessing it is not kill switch, just nothing. Instruments come on but no starting. Starter motor is working, have bypassed to test this and motor will fire.

Have had water pump off to be re-kitted, replaced dizzy cap and leads, fitted amps etc so have been under dash running new wiring, replaced steering cable. Can't think why any of these would cause what seems to be an electrical issue. Checked canon plug and although one of the prongs broke when I pulled it off, it looks clean with no corrosion.

Please help, we are supposed to be heading away for summer break tomorrow...

It's not in gear is it...... ? Neutral switch/connector been bumped and disconnected? Do a once over and check all the electrical connections around the motor. Follow all of the wires you see.

Check for neutral and the safety switch first.

Did a wire get knocked off the starter switch (key switch)? You could always take a jumper wire and jump from the +12V contacts on the switch to the start contacts ans see if the motor rolls.

No, definately not in gear. Firend came around this morning and has run a jumper from the key to the starter motor and she starts like a dream. Wondering if maybe we knocked off some wiring underneath when we put the new steering cable through.

Yep, made some more progress this morning and definately looks like a wire knocked off. We are going to bypass so we can at least go away on holiday. Thanks to our friend sonny... who was kind enough to come around this morning and put a jumper wire on for us. So we are going to head away and while we have some down time at the lake we may do some wire chasing as it looks like it may be one we knocked off while feeding the new steering cable.

Thanks for all your help guys
