The packing should only leak when the prop shaft is spinning. It's supposed to leak like 10 drips/minute when the prop is spinning at idle speeds.

I used Skidim.com's Goretex packing. We tightened it down good to seat the packing. Then loosened it, put the boat in the water, made sure it leaked quite a bit for 30 seconds or so, then tightened it up till it leaked a bit less than 10/min...... the idea being that this is their "semi-dripless" packing & it doesn't need to be lubricated as much as the regular old flax packing.

It's kind of a trial & error process. Just be carefull that your not working around the packing when it's spinning.

Good luck.

I need to do mine over the winter. How hard is it removing the old packing, and putting in the new one in? I know it's not technically hard, just mechnically a pain on a v-drive?
