Stuck Lock Ring on Stuffing Box

Recommended Posts

Ok Crew. Does anyone have any suggestions on freeing up the lock ring on the stuffing box? I applied PB Blaster penetrating oil numerous times and I'm using those cool little aluminum wrenches from Bakes. My last 'Bu was a direct drive so adjusting the box was a breeze. I can't see how I can get the leverage needed to free it up with the transmission in the way.

You'll probably have to put a pair of really long 3/8 drive extensions on the ends of the wrenches so that you can be putting torque on both nuts from the floor of the main part of the boat.

Thanks, I'll try that. I tried putting ratchet wrenches on the ends of the Bakes wrenches but due to the limited space I still couldn't get the leverage needed.

Go and get you a 24" piece of steel pipe that will snuggly slide over the end of that wrench. It will give you all the leverage you need. I think it is referred to as a "cheater bar".

Also work great when tying to get caliper bracket bolts of the truck for a DIY brake job.
