Removal of water pump hose

Recommended Posts

Other than the standard "Hit it with your purse harder" reply - i would say, if you can a twisting motion helps, and i have also used a screwdriver(s) to pry it loose, however it could likely damage the hose.

Yes, I couldn't get my purse in there far enough. I also couldn't get the screwdriver into the engine side. I guess I'll go back at it with a smaller screwdriver first

Yeah, "hitting it harder with your purse" only applies to direct drives. That tool won't work on a v-drive. :)

I use a screw driver. You can work your way around 1/2 to 2/3 of it. Once one side is somewhat free, just grab tight and try to rotate it back and forth. It will eventually come off. I do the same thing to get the hoses to the exhaust manifolds off at the t-stat bypass to dump antifreeze in.

It will work, but on the v-drive you have to hike your skirt up a bit. :Tease3:

:plus1: on the very flat screw driver. I have one on my bench specifically for this purpose.

Had this problem the first time I winterized my boat after the previous owner. I used some PB B'laster to get it loose. I've been told it isn't the best thing for the rubber of the hose, but it is all I had at the time, and it got the hose off in a few seconds after several minutes of cussing.

While draining the engine, I could not pull off the hose to the water pump. Anyone have any tips to break that loose?

Craftsman calls it a cotter pin extractor- other call it a hook tool.

Before trick-or-treating last night, I went back at it with my wife's purse, which is much larger than mine. I used that and a tiny little screwdriver, which I could run all the way around the perimeter. I could feel the seal breaking and it came right off.

Thanks for the tips.

When I was being showed by a dealership mechanic how to winterize my previous boat, he used one of the same tools. They look almost too sharp, but appear to be just the ticket. I found mine at Lowe's. Never had to use them though, as I have been able to twist the hose off. But they have come in handy for other things lots of times.

If you are like me and don't want to hurt your coach purse, you could always warm it up with a hairdryer to get it free.

Geeeze,

I thought I carried a lot of equipment on board.

But, msuwaterski takes the cake for packing a hair dryer in his boat.
