'04 HammerHead at High Altitude

I had a caller from Utah interested in my '04 LSV. He seemed concerned about how the HammerHead would run at 4,000+ feet. My local dealer suggested that he might only need to change props to compensate for the altitude. Any running this setup and care to comment?

Thanks!

Shoulda told him better than his tow would since its not loaded down with emission controls.

Um, I bet it will run better than engines with less HP and torque. Propping down is a definite. Here is a link to a horsepower calculator for elevation (scroll down and enter figures).

The problem with the '04 Hammerhead is that it makes its torque at a higher rpm than the Monsoon, & elevation affects your hole shot more than anything else. So, it feels like a dog coming out of the hole with a stock prop. Get it propped down correctly & it will feel a lot better. We went down in prop size by over an inch in pitch & it turned out just about right at every point in the power band.

I told Malibu it was bad marketing to keep the same engine names. Upon the demise of the Hammerhead 380 they should have named the Hammerhead 383 something else....... this way dealers etc. can pass along the correct information.

Maybe if you measure the HP farther back on the curve. That HH does need to wind up to get at its power - not as bad as an LS1, but definitely more so than the Monsoon. Propping down really makes the difference at elevation. With a Monsoon you typically feel a pretty linear power delivery, even when you put the throttle to the stops. With that Hammerhead you can feel the power coming on as you get farther up in the RPMs, & it really comes on above 25-30mph. (All of these observations are at 3k feet & above.) I would be willing to bet that the Monsoon would take the HH up to about 30, then the HH would catch it in a big, big hurry.

Now the Stroker, that's a whole different ballgame. Tons 'o' power all over the place. Yahoo.gif

Stewart,

I call the new HH the Stroker, no confusion there.

We use ours @ Tahoe (6,200 ft) with the stock prop and have no issues. It is a little slower out of the hole than at sea level, but more throttle seems to cure that just fine. The local dealer in Tahoe City Cope McPheters) gets a different prop for the boats used exclusively @ altitude.

If yours is an '05 (as it states in your profile), then we're talking about a different motor. '04 & earlier is a 350 ci motor whereas the '05 & newer is a 383 (a 350 with a stroker kit). Don't ever compare the 2 because they are 2 completely different animals. Stewart's right, they should have just changed the name.

I'm going to change the title of the thread to reflect this, hopefully this will cut down on any more confusion.

Thanks for all the responses. My dealer said he would swap the prop for one that is recommend at that altitude if this person decided to purchase the boat.

SWEET! Good Luck.
