Boat Haulers

In a few weeks I will be relocating from the Houston area to the Chicago area. I'm looking for a company to haul an '04 Tahoe and '01 Response. Does anyone have any recommendations? Any good or bad experiences?

7 years ago I had the Response hauled from CA to PA and it worked out well. 5 years ago I drove the Tahoe/Response down from PA to TX. No issues on that trip but the trailer has now been sitting outside for 5 years and I don't trust it for another long trip. It needs a lot of work. And my company is paying for the move. :-)

Talk to the HR department to see if there is a preferred hauler. There usually will be a contract that includes things like free insurance and other addons that the company will be able to get at a better price for you. If not try the trucking company(s) that have the contract to move the employees, they may have a recomendation or sub it out, again you are looking for the free insurance.

I used uship.com and found this guy (Wayne) and shipped my Sunsetter from CA to PA for $2k (approx 2500 miles). It also rode on a giant flatbed trailer which meant no wheel bearing/tire risk on the boat trailer. The biggest reason I liked the boat on a flatbed is there would be no stone chips from the long tow. He is fully insured and has all is paperwork in order - no fly by night guy towing boats.

He would send me an email each evening and let me know how far he made it across country. Super nice guy. He travels with his wife, he drives and she does the paperwork, picture taking, documentation. They do a great job.

Be sure to check feedback. I used a guy that had good feedback, but not as much as I would of wanted.

Pick up at my dad's place went smooth, 1 day later than scheduled, but he had communicated that.

Boat showed up 3 days late missing the swim platform. He said he had a drop off in Wichita but if you checked his feedback it looks like he picked up my boat in Dallas, then dropped a motorcycle off in South Texas on his way to Colorado, putting roughly an extra thousand miles on my trailer.

It was like pulling teeth to get money out of him. I eventually got uShip involved and they eventually kicked off of uShip and I was on my way to small claims court before he paid up.

He didn't understand how a swim platform would cost $500, I thought that was a pretty good deal. Then he refused to pay for the mounting brackets, all in all it was a pretty entertaining ordeal now that it's over.

I'll have to see if I can find his name somewhere. Since we was based out of Houston or Austin.
