newb question: where is my water intake?

Recommended Posts

I bought a fake-a-lake on amazon so that I could change the oil at home. I did a hunchback walk around the boat, and don't see any intake. Can someone give me an approximate location so I know where to look? (Hope it isn't covered by the trailer bed.)

Oh, I have a 2000 Sunsetter LXi with the Monsoon 325. (Older boat, new(b) owner. :-))

Thanks!

Open your engine cover and follow the large hose from the raw water pump (mounted to the pulley on the front of the engine) down to the through-hull fitting. That's your water intake.

Find the center of the boat (standing on the pavement next to it). Take two sidesteps towards the transom. Then look under the boat. Might be just a little further back than that but should be close. It's a bronze thru-hull with a built-in grate over the opening. You may have to get down on the ground to see it, it's towards the centerline of the hull.

Looks like this...

July 13th, 2018, changing my own boat oil for the first time, find a link to malibucrew post from 2011 about that elusive water intake in about 30 seconds complete with isometric intake part rendering (NorCaliBu),.....Thanks Boys!

Just an FYI and warning: if that fake-a-lake comes loose when running your oil change it will overheat fairly quickly and toast your impeller.  If you're serious about doing this on a regular basis I strongly recommend a flush kit.  There are a few out there, but the one Indmar makes is plastic.  I'm not a fan of that...

Several members here and on other forums have installed DIY units with adapters, but luckily for you this flush valve is readily available and at a price far cheaper than the DIY solution.  Just add barb adapters, cut the hose, install hose clamps and you're off and running.  A simple project that is really worth it, IMHO.
