Sticking Calipers vs normal operation

I think I have read all of the brake posts, and still need some help. I am not really sure my UFP brake system is operating correctly or not. I don't seem to have any problems stopping things with a Tahoe, but the Trailer Buddies are constantly throwing grease and making a mess. The hubs are warm after use, not so hot that you can't grab it, but you don't want to hold it too long! I have jacked up the wheel, and there is some friction while rotating the tire, but it does spin without much effort. I can hear a drag though.

I have bled the brake system and the actuator seems to work correctly. Trailer is a 2000 model, and I don't know the history of any maintenance. I keep the grease fittings just full enough, but the hubs do seem a little hot. The only comparison is to my brother's trailer (a tandem that holds a Cobalt) and those hubs are always cool to the touch. Mine are hotter than that.

Need new calipers? How do you tell if they are sticking? They certainly aren't frozen, but how much drag is too much??

I had a piston seal roll on me inside the caliper and the brake would not release very well. If would still turn when pulled by my truck, hot hub also. I bought a new seal from Auto Zone and rebuilt the caliper myself, pretty easy to do. If you have the UFP BD-35 disc brakes the piston seal part number is 66335 Bendix Brand.

Looking at the California site, I believe I have the BD 42 caliper. I think I will pull the calipers this weekend and see if I can tell if the piston or seal is binding.

Call UFP I think the brakes are 5 year warranty they will send u new caliper.

It's an 11 yr. old trailer.

Rat.

Take one calipher off at a time, don't take them both off at the same time.

Once off, let it lay on the ground and stroke the push rod inside the actuator and see if the piston moves out progressively.

Then, take a C clamp or large pliers and compress the piston back in. The movement in both directions should be smooth.
