Hey Malibu Fanatics,

I am brand new on this forum, but have a lot of time spent inside and behind a Malibu. I am 22 years old but have been on a water ski show team for 10 years. My family purchased a 1985 Malibu Skier 7 years ago or so for about $6,500. I do not have any ownership in this boat so all my suggestions are not always taken into use. I have noticed over the last two years the steering has gotten really tight on it to the point where it is hard to turn the boat. Can anyone give me more information on that? Is it cable steering and just a matter of changing the cables or how involved is this to fix? We have done a lot of work on the engine and have had to bring the boat in to get worked on pretty much every summer, until this year, it has not been in for any work at all which is a feeling. I absolutely love this boat, I keep thinking about all the updates and changes I would do to give it a more modern look. If anyone can give me some good advice on the steering issue that would be awesome.

I have been looking at this forum for a while now and everyone seems to give great advice and has a passion for Malibu boats. Thought it would be fun to get in on all these forums and chats! I will take pictures of the boat soon and attach them so you can see our 1985 Malibu Skier!

Thanks for letting me join this forum!

Tom

High probability the cable is bad and needs to be replaced. There are several threads on that task on the site. You can check by disconnecting the cable at the rudder and seeing if still stiff. There are a few Skier specialists on this forum, and they have gorgeous variants of the older Bu. They will be fabulous assets as you tackle the tasks on that boat.

What is the best way to find these Skier specialists on the forum to talk to them? I would love to chat with them about some questions I have with the boat. Thanks for your help

:plus1: Woodski is right on. His advice on disconnecting the cable from the rudder and testing to see if the steering wheel is still stiff is right on. If it is you know it's your cable, otherwise you need to focus on your rudder.
