intermittent tach signal

I have a 2001 Malibu resonse LX. I have been fighting with a intermittent tach signal. I have checked for loose connections but have found nothing.

I have replaced the guage with a perfect pass and still have the same problem. Reads 650-700 at idle and flickers some times and also when I'm running it works and then goes to zero or any number imbetween.

Any suggestions what to check next?

I currently have the Star Gazer digitial perfect pass and it is acting the same as the guage was acting. I installed it in the place of the tach and kept my speedo.

I pluged into the tach signal wire behind the dash. The Star Gazer works off GPS signal on the wake board option but when you go over to the salom function it runs off RPM.

When you run on Salom it will just go to your throttle setting when it looses tach signal.

What is the best way to test the tach pick up?

Is the tach pick up located on the distibutor?
