sheared alternator bracket bolts

Recommended Posts

I have a 2000 Sunsetter VLX and I sheared two alternator bracket bolts. I been reading on the web and seen that this is a common place for the indmar engine. I have a v-drive and obviously not alot of maneuvering room to work on it. I guess my question is, has anyone had this same problem and did you have to remove your engine to get the remainder of the broken bolt(s) out before putting knew ones in. Thanks!! Look forward to hearing from you. Obviously I will not be running the boat due to this. Im eager to fix this as I am running out of smmer time.

Happened to me twice before I found out about the updated bracket.

You don't need to remove the engine. Just remove the driver's side engine side panel and the small panel right up against the transom. As long as you can get the broken bolt out, there's only 1 or 2 (I forget) other bolts holding the alt. on.

Mine did this also.....the bolts were not hard to remove. Just use a left hand drill bit and an easy out and they should remove easily. I had no difficulties drilling the two bolts out hand holding the drill.

Bringing up this old thread. Anyone have a picture of the updated bracket? I have a 2000 response with monsoon. The alternator bracket Is The wierdest thing I've ever seen. What a pain to adjust. I'm waiting for that small bolt on top to snap off the block.
