Impeller changes orientaion

We were out on the lake last week and after a few hours of skiing, we pulled into the dock to change gear. When we returned about 20 minutes later, we started up and had a terrible squeal from under the dog house. After shutting down and trying again I found that the impeller pulley was stuck.

I pulled the belt off and after checking I found that the impeller pulley was stuck because the blades on the impeller had shifted orientation. After using a bit of force I was able to turn the pulley and could feel the impeller blades roll over to the correct direction. Once I re-installed the belt and started, everything ran as before and engine temp was at the normal 175 that I always had. This impeller has less than 10 hours on it.

The only thing that I can think of is that the engine rotated in the opposite direction on shut down just enough to turn the pulley backwards and shift the impeller blades.

Is this a common thing? :dontknow:

Impeller blade orientation should not matter. First crank should put them right.

I would think so too. The belt was tight enough but it still slid though the pulley. Maybe it is time to replace the belt?

It would be nice to have a little more serviceable impeller unit. Mine is a handful to service and you can't do it with the boat in the water. I have had a few emails last year with a member that retrofitted a new style crank mounted pump but had very little cover clearance. Now might be a good time to go down that road!
