steering column vibration

Recommended Posts

We surf 80% of the time, and ive noticed a fairly loud rattle/vibration in the steering under the dash when I first power up. Anyone had this problem or heard of it? tia

Yeah it happens mostly when the wheel (or rudder) is turned even slightly when you are taking off. It's due to the prop wash rushing past the rudder turning it back and forth. If you keep the rudder straight (which is hard to do or even know where straight is) it will elimininate it most of the time. If you grab the steering cable you should be able to feel it moving when it's doing it. Some people say greasing the rudder also helps.

Edit: My boat does it too unless I have the rudder straight.

Well that gives me some relief... maybe I havent paid enough attention the last couple of years but it sounds louder and more violent than I remember. Oh well, I guess I wont worry about it. thanks fellas.

Malibu offered a larger tiller arm which I've got, I also pumped the rudder full of grease. The combination of the two helped for a while but now it's doing it again. Just something I've learned to deal with.
