Drive Shaft Packing Question

Recommended Posts

We are new V drive owners coming from I/O's and I have a newby question. I am trying to check my packing for drip rates but I not really sure where to look. I told you it was a newby question. At the back of the V drive I see a shaft that comes out, goes to a very large bronze connection( probably 3 inch in diamenter) then two more inches and into a very large bronze nut, another 3 inches or so and it connects to a rubber section of hose with two hose clamps and finally through the bottom of the hull. What should be dripping, how would anyone tighten or loosen anything down there. I can barely get my hands down there let alone a tool of some sort. Any step by step info would be great. Pictures even better.

Thanks

Rob

Bill thanks for the heads up. When working on a v drive is it best to lay in one of the rear compartments and access the nut or from the v drive tray area?

I pretty much did everything from the rear, middle seat cushion. I don't remember the LSV being laid out any different in that part of the boat. If needed, you can remove one or more of the ballast pumps to make room for hands & tools. But I didn't even do that.
