Meguires Fiberglass restore kit

Recommended Posts

Looks nice. I tried this product a couple of years ago and did not like it. They may have changed the formula though because it looks like it's working pretty good on your boat.

I would say the description on the box is spot on. Mild to moderate scratches and oxidation. Make no mistake, this stuff is NOT "no more need to wet sand" stuff...

Here it is with one coat of Collinites. I'm going to do another coat this evening once the sun isn't so hot. I've only done above the rub rail for today but I am pleased at how it came out. I need to pick up a few more wool pads and hit the bottom half, still have plenty of product.

Thanks man, its a lot of work but totally worth it!

I hear you. After seeing Matt's results with Collinite's, I spent a good 6 hours one Sunday doing the entire boat less the fiberglass inside the boat. I washed it, then hit it with the cleaner and wax and got results much like what you posted. No question that it's totally worth it.

For sure, the kit I got came with Wax but I really like to Collinites. Not only does it work really well but its surprisingly easy to apply.

I'm just glad I don't have anymore of that nasty white chalky gelcoat! :yahoo:

Great work Levi! Looks awesome man. Lots for sure, but a classic Bu with that shine turns heads! Gotta love shiny gel!

Glad to hear I got you guys turned on to Collinite's! It rocks! Not only does it make the boat looks awesome, but it lasts as well. A couple applications a year and the boat sheets water like a duck. Like Levi said....it's really easy to put on and take off.

Keep up the good work man! Looking forward to the whole boat money shot! Rockon.gif

Not if it's applied at 90 degrees and sunny out  I'm still trying to wipe that stuff off 2 months later. Great wax though

I agree. Collinite's was one of the easiest waxes I have ever used. Like MA said in a previous post, you'll have to put up the full boat "money shot".

When I did mine, I used a Mcguires light cutting compound followed by the Collinite's #920 cleaner and topped it off with the #925 wax. The results were pretty damn good. Since then however my boat has been a trailer beauty stored outside. :Frustrated::cry: I haven't been able to put it on the lift because of high water levels and may not be able to do so for another 2 weeks. Plus, up until the other day, I didn't have a garage. I just bought a lot with a garage on it across the street so as soon as it gets emptied by the previous owner, I'll be able to have a clean, dry, safe home for the bu.

Mine is on the trailer under the Evo cover... I wont be able to put my lift in for at least a month. The water is so high here and the lake is full of debris. I could see 2 full size propane tanks floating from my house this morning...

Thanks for the thread, I have been looking for something to get the light oxidation out on the black on my boat. I placed an order this morning with Meguires.

Thanks

No problem man, make sure you get a nice wool pad for the compound and a good foam pad for the polish.

I'm going to try and chip away at the rest of the boat this week, I'll post up the "Money Shot" once its all done.

I've had good results with the 3M cleaner wax. Great UV protection and it does a great job on removing the oxidation. My boats have always been kept outside and they look like they came off the dealer's floor.

Looking forward to the finished product. Speeking for myself you know your are getting old when you get arm pump from buffing your boat.

I turned 31 on Friday... I'm 5" 10" about 165lbs, that buffer threw me off a 2' step ladder late in the day

Its almost like running a hole hog.

PS, Im talking about a real rotary buffer, NOT a little sears tird...

  • 11 months later...

it's been a year since this restoration kit was used.

  • did it knock the oxidation on it's butt or did the oxidation creep back?
  • would you do it again?
  • is it worth a periodic treatment?
  • opinions?

No update here, other than I just used the Maguiars mentioned above, or a new version of it. I had areas of fairly heavy oxidation, and some that had very little.

The bad area's I went over twice, and looks very good. The area's that had no oxidation look absolutely like brand new. Now added two coats of wax.

After a few week's in the sun I'll report back.

Tvano, the update is it worked awesome. I was able to just wash and wax this year when I get it out. NOW... this is the first year my boat is living out on a lift. Now granted it is covered. But we will see how much the oxidation creeps back sitting in the sun most days. I am planning to go out and re-apply my collinites at least 2 times throughout the summer. I would still recommend this kit.

Man, its weird seeing this thread from a year ago. I had just turned 31... seems like yesterday.
