Marked gas in the US?

Hey,

I already did a web search for marked gas in Seattle... but it didn't return anything useful. I'm from Canada, and up there they have what is called marked gas. It has pigment in it which tints your engine, hence the name. However, there are no road taxes included in the price so it is far cheaper and can be used in anything that doesn't use the roads (farm vehicles and boats). Is there something like this in the US? If so what is it called? Better yet, where can I get it in Seattle?

Thanks,

Graham

Haven't seen "off road" gas in the US but they certainly have off road diesel in many rural areas. It too is pigmented a bit so it can be distinguished from normal diesel. No highway use tax on the off road stuff.

My Grandfather used to get the marked stuff for the farm about 30 years ago. Havent seen it since.

If you find out what it is called and the proceedure for getting some please post up, I am sure a lot of us would like to know how to drop the cost of a fill up by about $0.65 per gal.

Chevron doesn't have a refinery in Washington.... Something to think about.

I've only ever heard of diesel being marked around here.

You can get a refund of the taxed amount. You still have to pay sales & coastal protection fund taxes, but you can send in an applicaiton for refund of the road taxes.

Have you actually done that? Seems like it would be worth the time.

I am now off to Google to see if MN has a similar program...

Yea, I did it a few years ago. It amounted to about a free tank every time I did it.

I didn't do it last year. I just got lazy.

Sorry, you're more than welcome to move out here... plenty of lakes, no State taxes, Fuel Tax Refund program, etc...

Years ago my company (golf course) would apply for a refund for all the gas that was used. Not sure how much it was but know the office people aways wanted my paper work on, quantity purchased and logs of usage. Had to make sure all the numbers matched up and non went into a on road vehicle.

No marked fuel out here either. They do dye #2 heating oil and check commercial over the road trucks for dyed fuel on a pretty regular basis.

I've submitted for tax rebates in mass a bunch. Its great to get the refund! You do need to keep receipts, both for the boats andany other vehicles you are buying gas for during the timeframe you are asking for a rebate (I only keep my truck receipts may - september).

That is sweet! 17 cents a gallon in Missouri

For Missouri, you need forms 4923, 4924, and 4925 from the Missouri DOR website

In Oregon they do enforce the "OFF ROAD" diesel law. If they catch you using it in your highway vehicle they fine you pretty well.

My best friend is a heavy construction contractor that does highway widening projects all around Oregon. He buys 1000's of gallons of "OFF ROAD" diesel every month. He has huge diesel fuel trailers that he puts on each job site. They are running huge excavators ( think backhoe on steroids, like 90,000 pound machines) and really go through the diesel.

Over the years he has upgraded his pickup truck fleet to be all diesel rigs. It is pretty convenient to put some off road fuel in his highway rig as he drives 40,000 miles per year because his projects are all over the state. Plus his foremen and key personnel drive a company pickup full time also. He has been pinched and it hurt. A lot.

I am absolutely positive that he has seen the error of his ways and does not put "Off Road" fuel in his highway rig anymore.
