Ski Rope Caught in Strut...Problem?

Recommended Posts

Just before I winterized my boat last fall, a submerged ski rope got badly caught up in my propeller. I cut the rope off and the boat worked fine during a short test run before winter layup (except for some dings in the prop which caused some vibration). This spring, when I put on a new prop, I noticed that there were still some small bits of rope jammed into the shaft strut. I was able to get a lot of it out, but there are still some very small pieces stuck in there...unremovable with a small pick and needlenose pliers.

My questions are: 1) will I be okay if I just leave it...hoping that it works itself out, or 2) should I remove the shaft...i.e., go to the dealer to get them to remove the shaft. I haven't put the boat in the water yet.

With the new prop installed do you still have vibration? Could your shaft be bent?

OP has not got the boat wet this year, though if there is still some vibration it is a bent shaft :(

As for leaving the rope bits in? I have no experance in this at all. There are some bushings (please dont start that debate here) in there that could be damaged if there is enough rope left to generate some heat. Post some pics if you can.

I don't think the shaft is bent...but I was really just eyeballing it when rotating by hand. I'm also simply hoping that its not bent also.

I forgot to take a picture and now the boat is 2 hrs away. I think I'll just try to floor it a bit once I launch it and then do an inspection.
