Did I get a good deal?

Hey everybody, new to the crew and happy to be here. After a long time looking I am purchasing a new to me Malibu. I just wanted to get some feedback from the crew if I am getting a good deal. I am 100% wakeboard and want to get into wake surfing this year as well. Here's the deal, 2002 Wakesetter 23 LSV. 480 hours with the Hammerhead engine. The boat is very clean, with tandem axle trailer. Titan tower with speakers, MLS, wedge, older cruise style PP, depth finder, hot and cold shower etc.....negotiated price $21,000. First whattya think about the deal? Second, I was going back and forth with the hull. I guess it's the V25 diamond. Wondering if being a newer wakeboarder if I will be regretting not getting the wake hull, any thoughts of the quality of the wake on this boat? I am planning on swapping the hard tanks for bigger fat sacs. Am I going to need to upgrade the PP to the star gazer?

First :welcome:

You wont really see a differance in the hull at wakeboard speeds, dimond hull will come alive at higher speeds. As for upgrading PP to stargazer, if it works why change? Star Gazer is a GPS system and thus very precise however if you are on a river you will have issues with the water speed. PP will hold the speed of the boat based on a paddle wheel on the bottom of the boat, a really good system for water speed. The GPS will give you speed across the bottom of the river, meaning if you have a river flow of 5mph and the speed set at 20 you will have a water speed of 15 mph going downstream and 25mph going up stream. (set speed +or- river flow). Just something to think about, I am on both still and flowing depending on where we go to board so the paddle wheel is a must for me. If you are always on a calm lake then the star gazer will work well for you.

Congrats on the new Bu'.

FWIW, the V25 Wake hull wasn't introduced until 2004. All of the 22'6" boats made by Malibu, from 2000-2003,

were on the V25 Diamond.

Congratulations on the new boat. You'll have a great summer.

Does the price seem right to you two?

What's the process of swapping the hard ballast tanks for the sacs? Do the new sacs attach to the the old connections or do I need to add a quick connect? Thanks

You should have paid more.

That is a similiar boat to what I have. They have sold for higher $.

All depends on where you live.

Have a great summer!

I would only worry about the terms of the deal before you close it. After it closes, sunk costs are sunk and buyers remorse or worrying about whether you squeezed every penny out of the seller is for chumps. Now, congrats on your purchase and go enjoy your boat! Thumbup.gif

No reason to look back. Declare yourself the winner and move on to the summer.

Price sounds reasonable. But at this point who cares. Enjoy the boat!

I was looking at boats for the last year or so, and that is a good price.

As far as the hull. People ask if one hull or another will be better. Considering these hulls used to be the same ones professionals rode behind, unless you are better than pro's of the 2002-2005 era, then you will probably be more than you need :)

Price sounds right if it is the shape you say it is in. I would probally have a mechanic look at it to ensure that there is no hidden problems. If that checks out sign the papers and get it on the water :yahoo:

I have a 2001 LSV and I take alot of people out with me. I pulled up to a brand new MasterCraft with some of the people I've taken out with me and one of them said thats the boat that has the best wake I have been on. I have my boat sacked out with about 3000lb to 3500lbs but the wake is great. One guy that rides with me has been behind a new X-Star, a Moomba and a MasterCraft 205 and he said the wake is as good or better than all of them.

I have owned my boat for 10 years so I have learned the best way of loaded the boat for the best wake. Long story short, I love my boat and I think you will too.

Thanks for your input, I'm looking for pointers on how to load it with ballast. How do you have yours set up?

Any vdrive with ballast, tower and perfect pass for under $25K is a pretty smoking deal. The fact that it's well under $25K, it's a 23' malibu, and it comes with the hammerhead... well that's a darn good deal. Certainly one I would have entertained when I was looked a couple of years ago.

Thanks everyone that responded. The factory MLS in the rear is 2 or 250, any suggestions on how to weight this boat with fat sacs I am planning in pulling out the hard tanks.

Everyone is so nice here.

Your deal is really good.

As far as the wake is concerned you will need a lot of weight for that boat. Contrary to what was said above, no pros rode behind this boat back in the day. The VLX was the standout and the LSV didn't come into favor until the 2004 models. I would suggest putting the 750's in the back and either 250lbs of lead or a bow sack in the front. I would also put a 500 in the walkway. That should give you around 2500lbs and the wake will get to a good size and the wedge will let you change the shape some more. The only problem is that you will need to balance out the rear sacks when they fill but you can do that underway by looking at the wake.
