Steering cable?

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

took the old girl out on the lake this weekend for the first ride of the year after a looonnng winter. Boat ran great

and everything was peachy until we went to trailer the boat. The steering became ridiculously hard to operate all at once after

turning fine all day. Almost like your car if it cuts off and your power steering goes out. I could still steer but with great effort.

I didn't have a chance to look at it afterwards other than to verify nothing wedged in the rudder. Is the steering cable the most

likely culprit? Boat is an 06 and always ran in fresh water.

Thanks

Hey KansasN01, Make sure you always open your motor box between outings.

Since it was turning fine all day it's hard to beleive the steering cable would lock up just like that. I dont know if this would help but one time while greasing my rudder I put too much grease in and it locked my rudder up, I would disconnect the steering cable from the rudder and then turn the wheel and the rudder to pinpoint the problem. Good Luck

Definate :plus1: Did you JUST grease your rudder?

No did not grease the rudder recently. Unfortunately I will not be able to check it out for a week or two

due to the fiance having some surgery. I appreciate the ideas. I wouldn't think the

cable would lock up like that all of a sudden either

.

Thanks for the offer Ndawg! I will take you up on that if you will let me practice on your boat with my new hole saw! Never know when I might need to drill a hole in a perfectly good hull so I need the practice!

maybe you had enough water in the boat so that when started on the trailer you may have floated something up between the gas tank and the rudder arm.

I think a dead possum got wedged between the tiller arm and the bottom of the boat.

let's make that a dead skunk to mark the beginning of ski season.

in michigan it's going to be time to get wet just about the time you start to smell dead skunk roadkill.
