2005 Illusion X base thread stripped out - need replacement base

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 23 LSV with what I think is the Illusion X tower. On the left side base, the threads have stripped out on the pivot bolt. I may try using helicoil but instead of jacking with that, does anyone know where I can buy a new or used base?

There may be few out, but it will be hard to find just a base for an Illusion X. If you were to get a base, chances are the holes will not be machined in the exact same location as your tower, and you'll end up doing more modification work to it then just replacing the helicoil.

Replacing the coil isn't that hard to do and I'm sure it will be alot cheaper.

I agree with Woody...

Unless you are 100 % that you are getting the exact match you could be creating a big problem.

The bases all look the same however the pivot hole and mounting hole can be off slightly from many the designs out there.

Trust me on this, I had to do some major mods on a tower that I thought was a matched set.

I agree new bases are not the route. The bases were (more or less) matched with the towers during manufacture. I say this because I had excessive tolerance between the bases and the tower so the tower would rock back and forth just a bit. Bakes explained that the bases are not all the same so replacements may not a) match finish b) line up any better. Same with replacing the whole tower, could've gone through that whole exercise to end up the same. Some rubber between the base and hoop took out the play.

I would look at helicoil also.

Sorry to threadjack- but how much 'play' is expected with the illusion tower?

Depends, bases should not be loose, so there should be no play there, as for the pin -bushing tolerance that should be also low. You can get new bushings. Rocking of the tower (forward/back up/down) at the very front can because of a gap at the tower-base hinge can be stopped by sticking a rubber or foam piece (like weather stripping) in between there. That is how mine is and I have to push up hard on the tower then push in the pin.

The boat is new to me, the movement is at the back- which I think you fixed with weather stripping or rubber. Can you post a pic? Did you change the Bushings as well? At the Allen bolts or the pull out pins? Where did you get them?

Sorry for all the ?s!! Thanks for the help!!
