Paint Removal from gel-coat

Recommended Posts

The original owner of my boat had a name painted onto the transom. I'm not a big fan of naming my boat and would like to remove it. Any suggestions for how to do this without harming the gel coat in the surrounding area? I don't know if I should go with a chemical remover, or the scraping/sanding/buffing route.

I have never heard of the easy off method mentioned above but it does confirm that the paints that are used for names and numbers are softer than those used on cars/trucks ETC. I used goofoff to get the roller marks off the bow last fall, without any marks on the gel. I would start with chemicals that you know wont harm the gel and see what works.

That's part of the issue, is that I really don't know which chemicals won't harm the gel coat finish. I can start a list now:

1. Easy Off

2. Goof Off

3. ?

lacquer thinner should work and I don't think it will harm the gel i have used it to wipe the gel before just never scrubbed with it or try acetone or MEK

Test MEK first it will take the paint off your car.

Acetone won't hurt the gel and takes nailpolish off pretty good.

After that its time to wetsand and buff.

Not sure if it'll take the paint off, but it's definitely the first thing I'd try. Totally safe for the gelcoat and commonly used prior to gelcoat work. Make sure you polish and wax afterwords.

Yeah, different strokes for different folks. I actually think it's somewhat clever. Maybe when I buy my ocean-going yacht, I'll re-use the name. I'm a much bigger fan of the clean look myself.

That has to be one of the top 10 most overused boat names.
