OLD FUEL IN TANK

Recommended Posts

I have not been able to get to the river in the past 16 months for personal reasons. I'm worried about the gas thats in the tank. I'm going in April and have my service done. What should I do about the gas? Or do you think it will be ok. I think i left about 20 gallons in it.

Did you add any fuel stablizer such as Stabil before your put it in storage? If you did, you can probably top off with fresh fuel and you'll be fine. If you didn't, you may want to have the tank drained when it goes in for service.

I usually do add fuel stabalizer. But, this time I can not remember if i did. We were supposed to go back to the river a few weeks later but never did.

I personally think its most likely fine. I've known people that have stored cars for 1-2 years, without stabilizer and no issues. I don't think gas breaks down like it used to.

Regardless, if you are worried, get some tubing and syphon out about half, and throw it in your car in dilute amounts. Then fill the tank with fresh gas, and it will be fine.

As long as the gas tank was sealed

what do you mean by that? All boat gas tanks have a vent to atmosphere. And, if you sealed it off, you'd have vapors building up.
