Piranha pump cartridges

Anybody know about rebuilding the Piranha cartridges? Just replaced 2 and would be cute to recycle them for back ups.

Wouldn't hurt to take it apart and see why it failed. Some things can be easily fixed like cleaning the commutator. Other things not so easy and wouldn't be worth fixing a 50.00 pump.

Yes, I replaced the dunkleflabs in a couple of mine, and they work great now. [i.e., what the heck is a commutator???}

dunkleflabs? The pumps in my boat have the flippsie-valve to prevent reverse flow. The're pretty easy change and only cost $2.99 each.

Cummutator? Dunkleflabs? Flippsie-valve? Seriously? All that work with out changing the Fahlangie?

I've taken them apart before and usually they fail from water penetration, it would be a real pain to get them put back together right though. I had to use a vice and a hammer to get the epoxy seal on the top to break loose so by the time i got it apart the plastic was in pieces :biggrin:

Here ya go.

Paul, I know that you know what a commutator is. :lol:

Anyway sometimes the commutator gets a bunch of crud on in from the brushes. Take some steel wool and buff it off and it will work again. I have fixed a few window motors this way in cars.

Oh, the "'electric' commutator". Now I get it, I thought you meant the "commutator:"

According to Wikipedia: "The commutator of two elements, g and h, of a group, G, is the element

[g, h] = g−1h−1gh.

It is equal to the group's identity if and only if g and h commute (i.e., if and only if gh = hg). The subgroup of G generated by all commutators is called the derived group or the commutator subgroup of G. Note that one must consider the subgroup generated by the set of commutators because in general the set of commutators is not closed under the group operation. Commutators are used to define nilpotent and solvable groups."

Since in the case of a Piranha pump g and h do not commute (but rather each drive their own cars), repair is possible, but requires someone who has a clue (like Ruffdog), not me. ;)
