Stuck Hoses

Maybe this is already general knowledge but I thought I'd share in case it isn't.

When winterizing my boat a couple weeks ago, I needed to pull the thermostat out so I could dump some RV antifreeze into the block. I also wanted to put a new T-Stat in while I had things apart. Well after loosening the hose clamps on the t-stat cover, I found that the rubber hoses were pretty much 'welded' to the metal. Tried prying them off of the t-stat cover without success. Finally, I managed to pry the hoses off on the exhaust manifold side to get enough room to access the t-stat. Once I had the cover/stuck hoses free of the engine, I went about trying to get the hoses off. First I tired prying with the better leverage. No go. Then I tried putting the hose in a vise and pulling with all my might. No go. Tried slightly warming the rubber up with a heat gun, still wouldn't budge. Now at this point I was cussing up a storm and considering just cutting the hose off and replacing it after I cleaned the corrosion off. As a last resort, I sprayed some PB Blaster in there, and to my surprise, after about 3 seconds I was able to twist and pull the hoses off with my own two hands. I felt like a complete moron for trying so hard when it was really that easy.

Hope this saves someone from their own personal embarrassment!

One of the BEST tools in the shop is silicone spray. It doesn't seem that slick but when used on rubber parts it is super duper slick. It will not attack the rubber like Hydrocarbon based lubes.

I didn't even think of it attacking the rubber. I will have to check on my hoses!

I did all the winterizing except for changing the t-stat and dumping the antifreeze into the block when the engine was warm

Agreed. I use my silicone spray all the time. Good for the guns too. Thumbup.gif

:plus1:

I've found I have had to use a flat head screw driver at times too in order to work around the inside edge of the hose as well...

Won't PB blaster corrode the rubber hose?

Yep..in the long run it will.
