Winter Storage w/ a Full Tank of Gas??

Recommended Posts

I am about to have my 08' Sunscape winterized and was unsure if it is appropriate to store with minimal gas in the tank or fill it up and add Stabil or similar product to boat.

It is not as big of a deal as it used to be as the tanks aren't metal. That said, last year I stored it full and this year I am going to store it nearly empty with stabilizer.

What ever gas is left at seasons end and I add red and blue stabil each at full dosage. Proir to the introduction of blue stabil, I added red at double dosage. Have never had a problem for 47 years. So this is even before stabil was a word. Come to think of it,... ski tower or barefoot boom wasn't a word either.

Thanks everyone. This is absolutely the best resource for owning a Malibu!!

FWIW I use Sea Foam in place of stabil, I find my fuel filters don't clog with Sea Foam. For some reason the gas here in the midwest doesn't respond to stabil as well as Sea Foam.

I always store with an empty tank because there is less weight in the boat and on the trailer and I always can start the season with fresh fuel.

I use to store with a full tank when I had access to no ethanol gas. The last couple years and no access to no ethanol, I started having bad gas problems (in the boat tank). Now I try to get it as empty as possible and Stabil the dickens out of it. In the spring, I fill up with fresh gas and have not had any problems since.

Exactly!

For this reason, all the guys who are saying "for years I have stored with a full tank & never had problems".......remember that we are using a different gasoline than we used 3 or 4 or 5 years ago. I live in 2 states, WA & ID, neither of which I can get non-ethanol gas easily. I run the ethanol laced stuff, and the boat does fine. But my confidence in the ethanol laced gas is not good enough that I want to run the boat on OLD ethanol come spring time. By treating the gas I have & running the boat low in the fall & winter, I am only storing a small amount of gas. If it goes bad, no big loss. And in the spring, I'll top it off with fresh gas & run it hard.

I'm thinking that this year I'm going to treat the fuel in the tank, run it as low as possible. Then suck the rest out and put it in my truck. Fill 'er up in the spring with fresh fuel and off we go.

I treat my fuel year round with starbite for corn fuel anyway...

I drain my tank completely by jumping the fuel pump. I then add 5 gals. of stabil'd gas and run the motor for a while.

Then, I pump that gas out and all the gas goes into one of my 3 cars, 1 motorcycle, or generator.

Im sure the wake surfer will have an aux fuel filling station under the retractable swim platform. Just ride the Duc up and fill 'er up!
